Newport Beach Removal of Old Ruptured Breast Implants by Dr. Juris Bunkis - OCPS*

Procedure Details

This female in her early sixties presented to Dr. Juris Bunkis of Orange County Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, California 25 or 30 years following a breast augmentation. She was now with rock hard and her breasts were tender. Mammograms confirmed that her capsules (the scar tissue around an implant) were calcified and the implants ruptured. Dr. Bunkis performed a capsulectomy (removal of the old scar tissue) and put in new silicone implants. Strangely, he found that one implant was below the pectoral muscle and the other was above. When an implant has been in this long, it has almost certainly ruptured so Dr. Bunkis will excise the entire scar tissue sac, with the implant inside, as shown in the photos, to avoid spilling silicone in the patient. The photos show a typical old capsule with calcifications. Such sharp spikes will always rupture the implants. Dr. Bunkis placed both new implants in pockets under the pectoral muscles and did a short scar, vertical (lollipop) lift on this patient and she remains happy and soft 7 years later. The moral of the story is get your implants exchanged if they are close to 20 years old!
