Excessive sweating weighing you down?
Battling excessive underarm sweating, otherwise known as hyperhidrosis, can feel embarrassing and inconvenient. Quality of life, including psychological, emotional and social aspects, can be greatly hindered by this not-so- talked-about condition.
Luckily for patients, we have two treatment options available here at Orange County Plastic Surgery.
The first treatment option, which may come as a surprise to many, is Botox ®. Botox ® is injected into the trouble area and for our purposes here we are discussing the underarms, although this treatment can be used for palms and feet as well. Botox ® works to inhibit the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which essentially decreases the sympathetic nervous system response, to decrease excess sweating! The effects of Botox ® for hyperhydrosis last approximately 3 months, though some patients appreciate the effects a little longer than others. Treatments will need to be repeated as the patient finds the desired effects are wearing off.
The second treatment we perform in our office is called ThermiDry®. This procedure can be done with a local anesthetic or in the operating room. We use a small radiofrequency probe under the skin, through a tiny incision in the axillary region, to destroy overactive sweat glands. The ThermiDry® procedure can destroy upwards of 80% of these overactive glands in one, one hour session. In comparison to others on the market such as miraDry® which uses microwave energy and also takes about one hour to complete, but often requires more sessions. And while miraDry ® is non-invasive, it is not reported to be without discomfort. Pricing is fairly similar in the first treatment but again miraDry ® can require additional procedures at additional costs.
With all the options available to you, we hope this either helped you narrow down your decision on which procedure is best for you or that you can use this information as a catalyst in the start of your research to treat hyperhidrosis. Each treatment and treatment plan is customized to fit each individual patient’s needs and results may vary. We are here to answer any questions you have so come on in and see us for a consultation to see if you are a candidate for either procedure!
