Gynecomastia is a common, benign condition, which is characterized by enlargement of the male breast and/or the collection of fatty tissue in the chest area. It usually begins in adolescence as a result of normal hormonal changes and typically resolveswithin two years. If it does not resolve within several years, many males choose surgical correction and obtain excellent results. Harvard trained, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Juris Bunkis has significant training in performing treatments that correct gynecomastia. During the procedure, excess fat and glandular tissue are removed directly by liposuction techniques if possible or by surgical excision if necessary. The result is a flatter, firmer, and more normally contoured chest. It should be noted that the fatty layer over the chest wall will be about a half inch thick after the procedure, a normal thickness for someone without gynecomastia. Since excess breast tissue can be caused by medical conditions other than gynecomastia, a doctor should confirm the cause before treatment. Ideal candidates will have
- A healthy body weight
- Fat and breast tissue that is resistant to diet and exercise
- Good skin elasticity
- Overall good health

What to Expect
Once you have undergone a thorough consultation and discussed your past medical history with your plastic surgeon, then an individualized treatment plan will be developed. Every body type is different, which is why we work diligently to offer a wide variety of implant shapes and sizes. If need be, implants can also be custom made to compliment your specific physique.
The procedure is performed at the Orange County Surgery Center under local anesthesia and deep sedation or a light general anesthetic through a small incision in the hair bearing region of your armpit. This will strategically hide the scars from plain site. After the surgery, patients will have their chest bandaged and in a compression garment that should be worn at all times. Patients should rest and move their upper body as little as possible for at least 3 days. Most patients can return to work in 7 – 10 days and resume low impact exercise in 2 – 3 weeks. The surgeon will go over specific recovery instructions and any prescribed medication.
Typically, pec implant surgery takes 1 1/2 hours to complete. Swelling and soreness is normal but the incisions should heal within 14 days. Normal activities may be resumed
