COVID-19 Update / Slide From Success To Danger

Welcome to all of our readers! Keep your comments coming, much appreciated. Well, our office continues to hum along, following all of the CDC safety guidelines and more! And I was happy to resume doing surgery at the Webster Surgery Center in San Ramon (see above, they were happy to see me back) and to seeing patients in our Northern California office this past week as well. Northern California shut down before we did and reopened later, just opening their surgery centers earlier this month.

California emerged as a leader in fighting the spread of the coronavirus early on in the disease. It was the first state to impose a stay-at-home order, and its swift response is thought to have prevented a shocking 1.7 million people from getting infected. But since my last blog, things have changed. The State’s case count is exploding and has surpassed 200,000 infections as of this morning. Los Angeles County is projecting that it will run out of hospital beds in 2-3 weeks. There were 2,903 new coronavirus cases Monday, the largest single-day number of new infections the county has reported since the pandemic hit the U.S. And Orange County is following suit. THIS IS REAL! Numbers don’t lie: The global death toll has passed half a million people, with more than 10,000,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection!

This alarming surge in Coronavirus cases in California in the last two weeks can now be traced to a surge of folks relaxing CDC guidelines for self-distancing, mask wearing and hand washing beginning Memorial Day weekend! Our hospitals and ICU’s are nearing capacity. The Governor and County Health Officials are considering a minimum of a two week mandatory shut down again to help subdue this surge. Be smart, do your part to make this not necessary!

We are all tired of self-isolation and self-distancing. I get it! BUT NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO RELAX AND BECOME COMPLACENT! July 4th is our Independence Day, the biggest celebration of the year as family and friends have always gathered, clad in patriotic colors, to celebrate this very special day. This year, I urge you not go to beaches, bars, or meet up with large groups of friends to celebrate the 4th of July!

Now here’s a July 4th activity you can enjoy – on an isolated road, not stopping at restaurants or bars. Wear a mask at gas stations. Just go smell the mountains, deserts or ocean – Borrego Springs, Julian, Santa Barbara, etc and you can bring your dessert with you!

To your health and well-being. Stay happy and persevere!

Drive safely, wear a mask in public, continue to wash your hands frequently, and be safe!
