Signs That The Pandemic Is Ending
Dr. Ekstrom on her first visioning workshop on May 8th.
Hello from all of us at Orange County Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, CA and
Salisbury Plastic Surgery in Worcester, MA. This was a busy weekend with
Mother’s Day and the completion of Dr. Ekstrom’s first visioning workshop! We
all thought her presentation was very well done! Her next free live event will
be in September, stay tuned.
It’s getting harder to think about COVID because it no longer has an exclusive grip on our lives. Most of our family and friends, most of our patients, have been vaccinated and do not live in constant fear of getting ill or dying. The focus of governments now is to reach those who have been hesitant about getting the vaccine, or those, because of age or social barriers, that have not sought vaccination. 45% of us are now fully vaccinated, and President Biden is pushing to get at least a single dose into 70% of the population by July 4th, a goal Dr. Fauci calls “ambitious but attainable”. The CDC is projecting a sharp drop in COVID cases in the US by July. The European Union has announced that it will allow vaccinated travelers from the US to visit Europe this summer. We all have hope for a return to a more normal form of life - Dr. Ekstrom and I are looking ahead and have purchased 3rd row seats to a Josh Turner concert in Massachusetts in August. We both also have children planning weddings this summer!
California and Massachusetts have moved out of the most restrictive levels of regulations set up to lessen COVID surges. As Orange County moves into the lowest yellow tier restrictions, hope for economic recovery grows. Restaurants are open – those that are left! Souplantation, the buffet-style restaurant chain founded and headquartered in San Diego, has closed permanently due to the pandemic. In Massachusetts, a full 28 percent of restaurants closed permanently due to the pandemic, and a similar number have gone out of business in California. Other signs that the pandemic is ending can be found in most walks of life. No longer are lines seen at COSTCO, Home Depot, Whole Foods or any other store – and no one is standing with a counter and deciding who to let in. Traffic is picking up on the freeways, but is still nowhere as bad as it was pre pandemic! During the pandemic, we observed that traffic moved along at 85 mph and police were not visible to enforce traffic laws – sadly, we will have to slow down now because State Troopers and Highway Patrol are again visible on freeways. Air quality remains good. We as a society have learned that it is possible for a large segment of us to be just as productive working from home, and some of that will continue post pandemic – and this will relieve our freeway systems for years to come. Not many of us knew what a Zoom meeting was two years ago - we have learned that virtual meetings can drastically increase productivity (why not cut down on travel, hotel, and associated costs and keep using virtual meetings?). Schools are reopening, but surprisingly, there is strong resistance to returning to classroom teaching! In spite of schools reopening, only 7% of high school students have returned to the classroom! Skate parks and malls are full of teenagers – do you think that those refusing to return to school are hoping to get into UCLA, USC or Harvard?
