Here is a little summertime guide to slowing the signs of aging. Some things can be implemented in and other things out, of a plastic surgery office.
Things you can do at home to improve your skin and minimize factors that cause damage to your skin that cause signs of premature aging.
1: Sun. Patients often ask me if it is better to use a chemical or physical sunscreen. My initial response is – the best sunscreen to use is the one you will use! It is important to reapply when you are out and about and use hats and shade coverage when possible. Physical sunscreen in short is something that sits on the sun and reflects sun rays – such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, not particularly easy to rub in and I personally find these best for small areas like the nose and lips. Whereas a chemical sunscreen absorbs sun rays and converts them into heat, which the body then puts off- active ingredients include oxybenzone. Chemical sunscreens can be a better option if you are active in the sun and sweating or swimming. An SPF or 30 or greater is recommended. By minimizing sun exposure, sun burns and sun damage you can slow the aging of your skin with less wrinkles and sun spots! We carry a great MD Performance™ SPF 43, formulated by Dr. Bunkis and his wife Tina.
2: Alcohol consumption. Alcohol causes dehydration not only in a generalized sense, but also to your skin. It can deprive the skin of vital nutrients and cause signs of premature aging.
3: Cigarette smoking/vaping. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and impairs blood flow to the skin- depriving it of nutrient rich blood, this can cause premature skin sagging and wrinkles as the toxins in tobacco products damage collagen and elastin, and not just on your face. Meanwhile, the physical act of smoking and repetitive pursing of the lips worsen vertical lip lines and the crow’s feet can also worsen from squinting to keep heat and smoke out of the eyes. And don’t forget you can ruin your nice smile with stained teeth and gum disease.
4: Diet. I do not mean you need to go on a diet. This just means being cognizant of what you habitually consume. Try implementing more fruits and veggies in your day. Fruits and vegetables have antioxidants, such as betacarotene and lutein, that aid in healthy skin development and tone and maintains a healthy glow for your skin and hair.
5: Exercise. Exercising release endorphins that make you feel and good for most of us, when you feel good, you shine. Exercising regularly increases blood flow to the skin, bringing nutrient rich oxygen to replenish the skin. Sweating also helps open pores to expel trapped dirt and oil. But remember, don’t sit in the sweat after you workout, be sure to cleanse thoroughly to remove all the buildup. Also, exercising activated the lymphatic system by muscle contractions and can rid of metabolic waste, helping you look brighter while detoxifying. There are many more benefits that exercising provides throughout your body, not just to your complexion.
6: Hydrate. Dehydrated skin looks old. Our skin is our largest organ and should be well hydrated especially when being exposed to the sun, exercising or drinking alcohol- all damaging to the skin as mentioned above. Dehydrated skin can look dry and flakey and dry skin is more prone to wrinkling! Hydrating does not just mean from within, you must also use a good skin care product to moisturize daily. It is especially beneficial to moisturize after showering when the skin is more porous- and absorption is increased. AND let’s not forget to moisturize the entire body, not just the face.
8: Sleep. A good sleep regimen is key. Poor sleep increases the stress hormone cortisol which can increase inflammation and stress (again not just secluded to your skin). Poor sleep can also cause dehydration and changes in pH. All of these factors negatively impact the glow of your skin.
Options for maintaining glowing, youthful skin and turning back hands of time at Orange County Plastic Surgery.
Sometimes we do everything right- and sometimes we don’t. But in either case, a quick stop at your favorite plastic surgery office can aid in your skin care and anti-aging goals.
1: Botox®. Helps minimize dynamic wrinkles of the face and over time improve some static lines. Botox® is a great preventative treatment, by softening the contraction of facial muscles over time, you get less lines “etched” in the skin therefore keeping the skin looking younger, longer. Botox® can last up to 3 or 4 months.
2: Dermal fillers. Fillers are a great way to add back lost volume and contour the face with little side effects or downtime. We use products in the Restylane® family as well as Juvederm® and Voluma® and Sculptra ®. Selection of product is determined based on area of treatment selection and goals. Fillers can last from months to years!
3: Chemical peels. Chemical peels are used to remove sun damage and improve skin texture and tone. We offer a variety of mid- depth to deep peels. Peel selection is based on severity of the underlying damage and degree of desired correction. Downtime can range from one week to a few, again depending upon the depth of peel. Results can last years.
4: Lasers. There are a variety of lasers offered in our office to lighten and brighten your skin. We have laser genesis which is great for tightening the skin and improving red undertones, a vascular laser to diminish those pesky little veins and the IPL, which is best known for improving hyperpigmentation and acne, as well as skin tightening. An initial series of 3 is typically recommended.
5: Microneedling. One of the newer additions to the practice, that gives a big result with little downtime- as noted in my previous blog! Microneedling with the only FDA approved SkinPen®, is great for acne scar reduction, improvement in fine lines and crepy skin. Downtime is about 24 hours. A series of 3 treatments is recommended.
6: Surgery. Dr. Bunkis, OC’s best plastic surgeon, can help you with all of your surgical concerns. Some of our top procedures are for facial aging.
- Blepharoplasty: A blepharoplasty can open up the eyes and by removing excess under eye fat, can help you look refreshed and rejuvenated- no more tired look!
