Orange County Plastic Surgery is Moving!
By Drs. Deborah Ekstrom and Juris Bunkis
We have exciting news! After more than a dozen years at our Birch Street location, we are relocating to a new and larger space. Our new address will be 1101 Bayside Drive in Corona Del Mar, within the well-known CosmetiCare building. Many of you may recognize this landmark—it’s located just to the left of the bridge leading to Balboa Island, with the Newport Beach Yacht Club right across the street.
The decision to move was driven by our growing team and the need for a more spacious, comfortable environment for both our patients and staff. With the addition of new doctors, we have simply outgrown our current office at 4501 Birch Street in Newport Beach. This move allows us to continue offering top-tier plastic surgery care while enhancing the overall experience for our patients.
We are thrilled to be joining forces with Dr. Michael Niccole and CosmetiCare, another well-respected name in the Newport Beach area. Orange County Plastic Surgery and CosmetiCare are both trusted brands in the community, and by combining our expertise and resources, we will provide an even higher level of care and service.
This marks an exciting new chapter for Orange County Plastic Surgery, and we look forward to welcoming you to our new location. Our commitment to excellence remains the same, but now in a space that better serves our patients’ needs. We cannot wait for you to see our new home and experience the benefits of this incredible partnership.
Stay tuned for more details, and as always, we appreciate your trust and support. See you at Bayside in the spring!
Quick Recovery Liposuction: The Evolution of a Game-Changing Procedure
By Drs. Deborah Ekstrom and Juris Bunkis
Dr. Bunkis fondly remembers attending the meeting in Honolulu in 1982, where Dr. Yves-Gérard Illouz, a French surgeon, introduced his groundbreaking liposuction technique to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. At the time, Dr. Bunkis was teaching at the University of California, San Francisco, and was so intrigued by this innovation that he invited Dr. Illouz to visit California in February 1983. This pivotal encounter marked the beginning of a long and successful journey in performing liposuction procedures.
Over the years, liposuction has seen remarkable advancements. Initially, the technique involved large cannulas and dry suctioning, which often resulted in significant bleeding, bruising, and prolonged recovery times. Today, smaller cannulas allow for more precise sculpting with reduced trauma to surrounding tissues. The introduction of tumescent fluid injections has been a game changer, minimizing blood loss, easing fat removal, and significantly enhancing patient comfort.
In addition, the evolution of liposuction technology has brought forth a variety of machines that improve outcomes. Traditional suction-assisted liposuction (SAL) has been supplemented by ultrasound-assisted (UAL), laser-assisted (LAL), and power-assisted liposuction (PAL), each offering distinct benefits for different patient needs. The refinement of post-procedure garments and medications has further contributed to better recovery experiences.
One of the most exciting recent advancements is the use of Tranexamic acid (TXA), a medication that stabilizes blood clots and reduces bleeding. TXA works by inhibiting the breakdown of blood clots, preventing plasminogen from converting to plasmin. By blocking the lysine binding sites on plasminogen molecules, TXA helps control post-operative bleeding and reduces bruising and swelling, leading to a quicker recovery.
The last few decades have also seen an explosion of fat grafting procedures – why throw the fat away if it could be used to augment another body part? Dr. Ekstrom is our “Fat Grafting Queen” and has done many, many facial, hand and buttocks fat grafting procedures.
With these modern techniques in place, liposuction remains one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures worldwide. Patients now experience less discomfort, reduced downtime, and improved results. Whether refining body contours or addressing stubborn fat deposits, quick recovery liposuction has become a safer and more effective procedure than ever before. For those considering liposuction, advancements in technology and technique ensure a smoother journey to achieving their aesthetic goals.
