What You Should Know About Liposuction

A Super Evening at Warner Brothers Studios!

By Dr. Juris Bunkis

As plastic surgeons, we don’t often find ourselves rubbing shoulders with Hollywood’s elite, but last week we had the unique privilege of attending a special pre-release screening of Superman at the iconic Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank. This exclusive event was hosted for diplomats and members of the film’s cast and crew, the day before the film’s public release. We were honored to be included—and yes, we were definitely the oldest people in the theater. I was also the only one in a necktie!

Stepping onto the Warner Brothers lot is like stepping back in time. Founded in 1923 by four brothers—Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack—the studio has played an integral role in American film history. From early classics like Casablanca to modern franchises like Harry Potter and Batman, Warner Brothers has helped shape global pop culture. The lot itself is filled with nostalgia: the New York-style streets, iconic sound stages, and even the Central Perk set from Friends.

This new Superman installment, “Superman: Legacy,” directed by James Gunn, is the first entry in the rebooted DC Universe. Filmed in part at Trilith Studios in Georgia and on the Warner lot, the production is estimated to have cost around $150 million. David Corenswet, a classically trained actor with a striking resemblance to the late Christopher Reeve, dons the cape for the first time. Rachel Brosnahan, best known for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, plays Lois Lane with energy and wit.

We can say this film does a beautiful job of balancing action and emotion. The theme of duality—how Superman balances his superhuman duties with a very human heart—felt surprisingly relatable. In our field of plastic surgery, we too navigate dual worlds: the outer and the inner self, striving to bring both into harmony.

It was a thrilling evening—one that reminded us how art, film, and even surgery can uplift and transform. And if you happen to catch Superman: Legacy on the big screen, keep an eye out for some subtle nods to previous films—James Gunn is a master of Easter eggs!

What You Should Know About Liposuction

By Drs. Deborah Ekstrom and Juris Bunkis, Orange County Plastic Surgery

Let’s start this week’s article with a quiz:

Which area of the body is most commonly treated with liposuction?
A) Thighs
B) Abdomen
C) Arms
D) Neck

And the correct answer is:
B) Abdomen (Most frequently treated area for liposuction.)

Liposuction remains one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States—second only to breast augmentation. At Orange County Plastic Surgery, we perform liposuction on a regular basis for both women and men seeking a more sculpted, contoured appearance in areas that have not responded to diet and exercise.

So, what exactly is liposuction?

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight-loss method. It involves the surgical removal of excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body. During the procedure, we make small incisions near the treatment area and insert a thin, hollow tube called a cannula. This cannula is attached to a suction device that gently removes unwanted fat, helping to refine the body’s silhouette and restore a smoother contour.

Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the areas being treated and the amount of fat being removed. Most patients experience minimal downtime and return to normal activity within a few days, although swelling and bruising may last for a couple of weeks.

The most commonly treated area? The abdomen—especially for patients struggling with stubborn belly fat that remains despite a healthy lifestyle. Other popular areas include the flanks (“love handles”), thighs, hips, upper arms, back, neck, and under the chin. Many patients choose to combine liposuction with other procedures like tummy tucks, breast lifts, or facelifts to enhance their results.

Ideal liposuction candidates are close to their ideal body weight, in good health, and have good skin elasticity. While liposuction can remove fat, it does not tighten skin, so in cases of significant laxity, additional procedures may be recommended.

The results of liposuction can be long-lasting if a stable weight is maintained. Patients often tell us that their clothing fits better and they feel more confident after their procedure—a reminder that small surgical changes can have a big impact.

If you’ve been considering liposuction, we’d be happy to talk with you about your goals and whether you’re a good candidate. Call us at Orange County Plastic Surgery to schedule a consultation. A slimmer, more sculpted you may be just a step away.
