Recognition of Excellence

By Dr. Juris BunkisDecember 12, 2022No Comments

Awards received recently by Orange County and Salisbury Plastic Surgery

By Drs. Compoginis, Ekstrom and Bunkis

We have been practicing plastic surgery for a long time, 85 years between the three of us (and that does not even count the time spent in college, medical school, internships, general surgery or plastic surgery residencies). We all began our careers teaching – Dr. Compoginis at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena (affiliated with Cedars-Sinai), Dr. Ekstom at the University of Massachusetts and Dr. Bunkis at the University of California San Francisco.

While we all still teach at some level, still attend meetings and give lectures, the bulk of our time has been spent in private practice for many years. We all strive to provide our patients an honest evaluation of their concerns and to give them the best possible result with our interventions. We have dedicated staff at both offices to help us realize our goals. There are hundreds of plastic surgeons in central Massachusetts and Newport Beach (126 in Newport Beach alone). Saying there are plenty of surgeons for our patients to choose from is an understatement. That is why it came as a pleasant surprise for both practices to receive recognition awards – we must be doing something right!

Of course, as providers, we are honored by these awards. Public recognition is powerful and important – and validities our efforts to serve you, our patients, and our communities. And for that we thank you!

Surgery Spotlight: Less Filters, More Fillers with a Brazilian Butt Lift - By John Compoginis, M.D., F.A.C.S.

A trending plastic surgery procedure that has recently been popularized by certain celebrities and social media influencers is the “BBL.” But what is a “BBL?” The BBL stands for “Brazilian butt lift” and originated from a pioneering Brazilian (Ivo Pitanguy) plastic surgeon in the 1960s. After liposuction is performed, the fat that is harvested can be kept sterile and then used to improve the contour, size and shape of the buttocks and hips. The goal is to increase self-confidence by enhancing fullness, roundness, projection, hiding “hip dips” and improving the balance of your figure.

I’m often asked if the fat can be donated from another person. The answer, unfortunately, is no. Any fat from a different person (even a relative) will be seen as foreign by the immune system and be attacked/rejected by the host.

Two of the major criteria that need to be met in order to be a candidate for the procedure are (1) having enough fat to harvest, process and use and (2) can the skin envelope of the buttock accommodate the fat that is desired. These two criteria can be assessed during your consultation.

After surgery the goal is to preserve the new shape of the buttock and as much of the fat that is transferred. This is accomplished by avoiding sitting and sleeping on the buttock for 6-8 weeks. Special pillows are available to offload weight onto your legs instead of the buttock. A compression garment is also worn to maintain shape and collapse space where liposuction was performed. Overall the procedure has relatively little downtime compared to other major plastic surgery procedures.
