What is a Cheek or Midface Lift?

Sagging of the cheeks and thinning in the mid-face area is a condition that can be improved with a midface lift. It can be a standalone procedure or it can be performed in conjunction with a full facelift. A full facelift has the additional benefits of helping to restore the eyelid areas. A mid-face lift is also known as a cheek lift. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Juris Bunkis will work closely with you to create a treatment plan that will address your cosmetic goals. A cheek lift in Newport Beach adds volume to the upper cheek, and it can also be used to restore the malar fat pad.

What is the Best Age for a Midface Lift?

If you’re suffering from sagging or thinning cheeks that have been affected by age or are the source of insecurity, then consider a cheek lift, or a mid facelift. A consultation with Dr. Bunkis at one of our California locations allows us to help you address this concern and get you on the right track to your desired outcome.

The earliest signs of aging show up in the mid-face area, an area from the corners of the mouth to the corners of the eye. Mid cheek lines and sagging develops at different times for each person, so it is difficult to specify an age for a midface lift. The lid/cheek junction and face fascia begin to drift downward, lengthening the height of the lower lid, and a drooping cheek will enhance the nasolabial fold. Frequently this occurs before the neck becomes lax. An aging face has more fullness along the jaw line and the face resembles the letter “A”, looking somewhat like an underinflated tire. A youthful face has the maximum fullness in the area of the midface, in over the cheekbones, and the face resembles the letter “V”. Cheek surgery, which may involve malar fat pad removal, is an ideal solution for these concerns.

How is Cheek Lift Surgery Performed?

During cheek lift surgery, incisions are made behind the sideburn and a stab wound in the nasolabial fold. Using sutures that are placed directly in the fat pad, the cheek is pulled back up to its original position, giving the face a more youthful appearance. Cheek lift plastic surgery tightens and smooths the appearance of nasolabial folds, as well as the vertical lines that run downward from the mouth and on the sides of the chin. Midface surgery also helps with the cheek contour that can be refined with cheek dermal fillers.

Midface lift surgery is performed under deep sedation and local anesthesia or a light general at the accredited Orange County Surgery Center. The length of the surgery, if performed alone, will usually takes less than an hour.

What are the Alternatives to Cheek Lift Surgery?

You may be able to achieve similar results of a cheek lift without surgery. The best approach for a non-surgical cheek lift is to use dermal fillers. A cheek lift with fillers does not last as long as surgery, and you will need cheek lift fillers every six to 24 months. Dr. Bunkis may also recommend additional non-surgical treatments to enhance the results of your cheek lift non-surgical options.

Cheek Lift Fillers

Dermal fillers work by adding hyaluronic acid to the skin, as well as collagen stimulators to lift the skin. These products are very effective for adding facial volume in the cheek area, as well as around the nose and mouth.

  • Sculptra®: Sculptra® is an injectable dermal treatment that contains poly-L-lactic acid, a substance that is clinically proven to stimulate collagen production. Results last up to two years.
  • Restylane®: Restylane® contains hyaluronic acid that binds with water to add volume to the cheek and midface area. Results last up to 12 months.
  • Voluma® XC: Voluma® XC is a hyaluronic acid product that is specially designed for the cheek area. Results last up to 18 months.

How Long is Recovery Time for a Cheek Lift or a Midface Lift?

Cheek lift recovery time varies by person, as each person’s body heals at a unique pace. After surgery, patients will not be very bruised or swollen, but the face will feel tight. Cheek lift recovery following a cheek lift takes about five to seven days. It is common for patients to feel anxious during midface lift recovery because they are concerned with how their face will appear.

How Long of a Recovery Is It for a Cheek Lift?

On average, it takes four to six months or longer for the final results to appear. This is the amount of time that it typically takes the bruising and swelling to subside.

Can a Cheek Lift Be Performed as Surgery to Make a Face Smaller?

Cheek lift procedures are often perceived as an option for surgery to make a face smaller. Although this is not the primary goal of the procedure, it may be possible to remove and relocate fat in the cheeks. Therefore, it can be perceived as a smaller face surgery for men and women who feel that their midface region has too much fullness.
