About Facelift

A facelift for Newport Beach men and women is one of the most common aesthetic surgical procedures performed by Harvard trained, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Juris Bunkis at Orange County Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, CA. Signs of aging make people feel as if their appearances don’t reflect their physical and mental energy, but a facelift can help.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, mid-facelift, or mini facelift are procedures that are designed to provide you with a rejuvenated appearance. After facelift surgery, you will look as vigorous as you feel. A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, may be beneficial if you have excessive sagging of the facial and neck skin or dynamic wrinkles and fine lines.

Facial Aging and Rhytidectomy

Rhytidectomy, the definition of which is a facial surgery that corrects facial aging, is recommended for men and women who have advanced signs of aging, such as:

  • Deep nasolabial folds
  • Extra laxity in the skin
  • Less facial muscle tone
  • Fat loss, shifting, and other facial-aging issues

What is the Best Age for a Facelift?

You can turn back the clock and look more youthful facelift surgery. The surgery can address all the tell-tale signs of aging, such as lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Not only will you look years younger, but you’ll also feel better about yourself. The best age for facelift surgery is difficult to define because each person ages differently. The average age for a facelift is between 40 to 60 years old. Young skin looks smooth and supple thanks to the body’s ability with producing collagen and elastin, as well as hyaluronic acid. As such, Dr. Bunkis rarely recommends a facelift on a young person, unless there is severe sun damage and other factors that cause sagging of the skin.

The best way to tell if you are ready for a facelift in Newport Beach is to seek Dr. Bunkis’ expert advice. He will recommend a full facelift, mini facelift, or other rejuvenation treatment that helps you look and feel your best.

Surgical and Non-Surgical Facelift: Which is Better?

Dr. Bunkis offers surgical and non-surgical procedures for the face to help with signs of aging. During your consultation, he describes the nature of your lines, wrinkles, sagging, and other concerns, as well as explains the underlying causes, such as sun damage, lost collagen, and transient fat. Based on his findings, he may recommend a surgical solution, such as a full facelift or mini facelift, or the best alternative to a facelift, such as a non-surgical procedure.

What is a Non-Surgical Lift for Anti-Aging?

A non-surgical lift is a technique used by Dr. Bunkis as an alternative to a facelift. These plastic surgery alternatives are ideal for men and women who want to rejuvenate the face, but do not have the advanced signs of aging that justify a surgical facelift or mini facelift. There are several nonsurgical facelift options.

Targeted Lift Surgical Procedures

If your signs of aging are not present across your entire face or the lower part of the face, you may be a good candidate for a mid-face lift/cheek lift or eyelid lift (blepharoplasty).

  • Mid-Face Lift/Cheek Lift: A mid-face lift, also known as a cheek lift, adds volume to the cheek area of the face. Doing so lifts the skin and smooths lines and wrinkles.
  • Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty): If your goal of cosmetic procedures is to rejuvenate your eyes so you don’t look tired all the time, an eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, make be right for you.
  • Forehead Lift/Brow Lift: As skin of the forehead sags due to aging, you develop an angry look that makes you look older. If this is the only area that shows signs of aging, Dr. Bunkis may recommend a forehead lift/brow lift.

Laser Facelift:

A laser facelift uses high-intensity light energy to target superficial signs of aging that make you look older. Specifically, these non-surgical treatments help with fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, dull complexion, acne scars, and other issues. The three most popular laser facelift treatments for men and women in Orange County are IPL® photofacial, laser skin resurfacing, and RF skin tightening.

Chemical Peels:

Chemical peels can rejuvenate your skin and address fine lines, deep wrinkles, clogged pores, enlarged pores, dull complexion, hyperpigmentation, and other skin flaws. Orange County Plastic Surgery offers light, medium, and deep chemical peels. Each level penetrates the skin to a specific depth to remove damaged layers of skin. Light chemical peels can be performed every month as part of your routine skin care regimen. Medium peels can be repeated every six months. Deep peels, the most advanced types of chemical peels, can only be performed only once during your lifetime.

Liquid Facelift:

For mild to moderate signs of aging, the liquid facelift treatment for men and women in Newport Beach and surrounding areas of Orange County has proven very effective. Dr. Bunkis uses a combination of dermal fillers and neuromodulator injectables to soften wrinkles and fine lines.

Facelift Techniques Used at Orange County Plastic Surgery

Dr. Bunkis of Orange County Plastic Surgery offers two options for a facelift in Newport Beach – the mini facelift and full facelift. When you meet with him for a consultation, he explains why the mini facelift procedure or full facelift procedure is your best option to address your personal cosmetic issues. Both techniques do produce scarring, and the only way to rejuvenate the face without the scarring is with a non-surgical or minimally-invasive plastic surgery procedure.

What Does a Full Facelift Include?

For a full facelift, the entire face is lifted. This is ideal for men and women with advanced signs of aging, such as:

  • Transient fat in the mid-face
  • Sagging around the jowls
  • Furrows between the eyes
  • Forehead creases
  • Deep nasolabial folds
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Sagging muscles in the face

What Does a Mini Facelift Include?

While a full facelift is aimed at tightening sagging muscles under the skin and thus minimizing jowls and neck laxity, a mini facelift targets specific areas on the face around the cheek and jaw in patients without much neck laxity. A mini facelift is generally used for patients that show early signs of aging or those who have had a full facelift earlier and is less invasive than a traditional facelift. In a full facelift, sagging muscles are tightened but in a mini facelift, only skin is tightened.

Facelift and Mini Facelift Surgery

Facelift and mini facelift surgery are performed in the surgical suite of Orange County Surgery Center. Dr. Bunkis may use a general or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.

Full Facelift Procedure

The Natural A to V Facelift is performed at the accredited Orange County Surgery Center under a light general or under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. With carefully-placed incisions behind the ear and around the hairline, the underlying muscles are tightened to create long-term results.

Frequently, micro fat grafts are used to restore volume to the face. The skin is repositioned and re-draped tighter for a smooth, natural appearance. Facelift surgery typically takes around three hours to complete. More time may be needed if eyelid surgery or a brow lift are also performed.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from a Facelift?

Knowing how long to recover from a facelift in Newport Beach helps you make arrangements with work and ensure that you have family and friends available to assist you. After a facelift, a facial bandage will be placed over the surgical site and it will be replaced during the next day, the drain will be removed and the patient will be given an Oxymist® facial treatment. As part of your facelift recovery time, it’s normal to experience minimal discomfort, which can be alleviated by icing and elevating the head. Post-operative bruising and swelling after face surgery may last up to two weeks after surgery. In rare cases, migration of sutures is possible.

Initial healing time for facelift surgery takes about two weeks. Most patients can resume normal activities. After about three weeks, patients are able to notice the dramatic and natural results of the surgery. The final improvement will not be realized before four to six months after surgery.

How Long Do Facelift Results Last?

Dr. Bunkis is a talented double board-certified plastic surgeon who achieves amazing facelift results. How long does a facelift last varies by person, but most people enjoy the results of a facelift after 10 years. While facelift results offer long-term anti-aging benefits, just like any other surgery, the effects are not permanent since the face will continue to naturally age. However, a patient will still look younger compared to if he or she had never had the surgery.

The effects of a mini facelift last up to five years depending on the lifestyle and aging of the patient, while the general facelift effects are much longer. Both, though, provide years of a more youthful appearance.
