Just as some people are taller than others, have bigger or smaller breasts or noses than others, female external genitalia vary depending on age and hereditary factors. Enlarged or asymmetrical labia minora can lead to embarrassment or hurtful comments, and can make it difficult to find bathing suits, panties or jeans that do not show the bulge. Many females chose a labial reduction to end their self-consciousness! Labial reduction is now one of the more common procedures that we perform in our office, usually under local anesthesia.
A labiaplasty is an operation in which excess tissue is removed from enlarged or protruding labia minora, labia majorum, or in some cases, a reduction of both the majorum and minora. This is accomplished by excising a wedge of excess labial tissue. Patients wishing more fullness of the labia majorum will frequently request filler injections for a more youthful look. This procedure is frequently combined with other aesthetic operations such as liposuction, breast enhancements or other unrelated procedures, and in those cases, will be done in an operating room in a surgery center with intravenous sedation. Some patients who in addition to having protruding labia also have issues with vaginal vault laxity, difficulty climaxing, dryness or other signs of aging and hormone fluctuation. This patients can be helped by our PA, Crystal Osborn, with a series of radiofrequency vaginal rejuvenation treatments, ThermiVa, or sometimes by bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, all of which we do at Orange County Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach.
”It is very rare for a labiaplasty patient not to be thrilled with the result of the procedure – patient satisfaction rates are exceedingly high. A common question is, "How long will the results of this procedure last?" In general, it is not necessary to repeat this procedure to maintain the optimal result, even following pregnancies.
This procedure was performed under local anesthesia. Numbing cream is applied to the labia for 20 minutes to decrease discomfort from the injections and we will frequently give a patient some oral Valium an hour before the procedure to take the edge off the injections. Once the injections are in, patients do not experience any more discomfort.
