Halloween Origins and Popularity in the USA
By Drs. Deborah K Ekstrom and Juris Bunkis
Halloween, celebrated on October 31, has deep-rooted origins that make it one of the most anticipated holidays in the USA. This spirited celebration began over 2,000 years ago with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.
Marking the end of harvest and beginning of winter, Samhain was a time when Celts believed the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred, allowing spirits to roam the Earth. To ward off these spirits, they’d dress in costumes and light bonfires—a practice that gradually evolved into Halloween’s tradition of dressing up in various costumes.
Over centuries, as Christianity spread, Samhain blended with All Saints’ Day, creating All Hallows’ Eve, which eventually became “Halloween.” The holiday made its way to North America in the 19th century with Irish immigrants, who brought their customs and love for communal gatherings. It grew in popularity, especially with the tradition of trick-or-treating, which became widespread in the 20th century and remains a beloved activity for children today.
So, what makes Halloween so popular in the United States? Halloween has a way of bringing people together through its blend of creativity, tradition, and community. From haunted houses and hayrides to the thrill of transforming into a new character, Halloween appeals to people of all ages. Additionally, the commercial aspects—pumpkins, decorations, and candy sales—fuel the fun, making it an almost $10 billion industry each year.
At our practice, we encourage everyone to stay safe this Halloween and take time to enjoy the festivities, whether that’s with family trick-or-treating or watching spooky classics. After all, Halloween is a holiday that reminds us to celebrate the playful and imaginative sides of ourselves!
How Does Fat Gafting Work and Where Does it Work the Best?
Microfat Grafting: Natural Rejuvenation for Face and Hands
By Dr. Deborah Ekstrom
As you may have gathered, microfat grafting is one of my favorite procedures to perform because it requires technical excellence and a sense of artistry. Microfat grafting is an innovative technique that uses your body’s own fat to restore volume, smooth out wrinkles, and enhance contours in areas like the face and hands. It’s a popular choice for patients looking for a natural, lasting solution to aging without synthetic fillers or implants.
How Does Microfat Grafting Work?
Microfat grafting works by harvesting fat cells from areas where you have excess—commonly the abdomen or thighs. These fat cells are carefully purified to ensure only healthy, viable cells are used. The purified fat is then delicately injected into targeted areas to enhance volume and provide a smooth, youthful appearance. Because the grafted fat comes from your body, the procedure has a high acceptance rate, providing both natural results and lasting improvements in skin quality.
How is Microfat Grafting Done?
The procedure begins with a gentle liposuction technique to harvest the fat. After purifying the fat, the surgeon strategically injects it into the desired areas. Since microfat grafting involves tiny droplets of fat, the injections are meticulously placed to achieve even distribution and smooth contouring. With a minimally invasive approach, microfat grafting has a relatively short recovery time, allowing most patients to resume regular activities within a few days.
Where Can Microfat Grafting Enhance the Face and Hands?
In the face, microfat grafting is excellent for adding volume to the cheeks, filling under-eye hollows, filling out a hollow upper lid/brow and enhancing lips. It is also highly effective for softening nasolabial folds and marionette lines, bringing youthful fullness to areas impacted by age. For the hands, microfat grafting helps replenish lost volume on the dorsum of the hands, reducing the appearance of veins and tendons while improving skin quality.
Of course, fat can also be used to augment the buttocks (Brazilian Butt Lift). Our practice offers expertise in microfat grafting to provide natural, beautiful rejuvenation, ensuring patients feel refreshed, confident, and beautifully enhanced.
