Mastopexy – One Size Does Not Fit All

Recharging Our Batteries at the Spotlight Latvia Meeting

By Dr. Juris Bunkis, Medical Director, Orange County Plastic Surgery Honorary Consul of the Republic of Latvia

As surgeons, both Dr. Ekstrom and I work long hours most days of the week, often without a pause. We love what we do, but after a few weeks of intense surgical schedules, consultations, patient care and the stress of every day living, we find ourselves ready for a change of pace—and sometimes, a change of scenery. Fortunately, my role as Honorary Consul for the Republic of Latvia offers exactly that. As the saying goes, “a change is as good as a rest.”

Last week, that change came in the form of the Spotlight Latvia meeting held in McLean, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. This event brings together government officials, entrepreneurs, and innovators to highlight Latvia’s global contributions. Four years ago, Dr. Ekstrom and I had the honor of hosting this same meeting at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, with a theme focused on the entertainment industry.

This year’s meeting had a decidedly different focus—defense, technology, and innovation. The central theme revolved around the conflict in Ukraine, cybersecurity, and Latvia’s remarkable role in drone development. It was truly inspiring to see how small, agile companies from Latvia are leading the way in creating cutting-edge drone technology, rapidly improving their designs after each real-world deployment. Their speed and adaptability often outpace that of global giants like Lockheed or Boeing—a testament to the ingenuity of small nations thinking big.

The event also provided a chance to reconnect with familiar faces, including the Hon. Valdis Dombrovskis, currently an EU Commissioner and Vice President of the European Union, whom I hosted in Los Angeles back in 2011 when he served as Latvia’s Prime Minister. We also had the pleasure of meeting the Latvian Minister of the Economy, Viktors Valainis, and my Ambassador, Elita Kuzma—whom I first met years ago in Rome when she served there as Ambassador.

As I reflect on my twelve years as Consul, I’m amazed at how many meaningful friendships and opportunities this role has created, both here in Southern California and in Latvia. On the flight home, I even found time to dive into a book about the history of the Korean peninsula—a perfect wind-down after the stimulating discussions in Washington.

Now, we’re back home in Newport Beach, rested, refreshed, and ready to return to what we love most—helping our patients look and feel their best. Until the next trip, when we recharge our batteries once again!

QUIZ TIME!

Which of the following statements about breast lift (mastopexy) surgery is TRUE?
A) A breast lift always requires an implant.
B) A breast lift leaves the nipple in the same position.
C) Most modern breast lifts require an overnight hospital stay.
D) Most women can return to work within a few days after a breast lift.
E) Breast lifts are only for women after pregnancy.

Correct answer: D) Most women can return to work within a few days after a breast lift.

Having performed breast lift surgery for forty years, I’ve witnessed a remarkable evolution in technique, safety, and recovery. In the early years, a mastopexy patient might have stayed in an overnight care facility and taken weeks to resume normal activity. Today, thanks to advances in surgical planning, anesthesia, and aftercare, most patients are back to light work within just a few days.

Modern breast lift surgery is far more customized than ever before. The degree of lift is tailored to the individual—whether it’s a minor elevation to restore youthful perkiness or a more significant reshaping after pregnancy, weight change, or aging. The procedure focuses on repositioning the nipple to a natural level, tightening the skin envelope, and restoring firmness without necessarily adding volume. For women who desire both lift and fullness, a combined mastopexy-augmentation can be performed safely in a single operation.

Technological advances in anesthesia and surgical techniques have made recovery more comfortable. Most breast lifts are now performed under light general anesthesia, with gentle tissue handling and fewer drains. Postoperatively, patients benefit from compression garments, early ambulation, and modern scar therapies that improve results dramatically.

Ideal candidates for mastopexy are healthy, nonsmoking women who are happy with their breast size but wish to correct sagging or drooping. Those with significant medical conditions, uncontrolled weight fluctuations, or plans for future pregnancies may wish to postpone surgery.

The goal of a breast lift is not only to elevate but to reshape—to restore youthful proportions and confidence. It’s one of the most rewarding procedures in aesthetic surgery because the transformation is both visual and emotional.

If you’ve noticed that your breasts no longer sit where they once did—or clothing no longer fits as comfortably—schedule a consultation with me, Dr. Deborah Ekstrom, at Orange County Plastic Surgery. Together, we’ll design a personalized plan to help you look and feel your best.
