Summer Is Almost Here!
By Drs. Juris Bunkis & Deborah Ekstrom
Summer is just around the corner, and like many of you, we are enjoying the signs that the season of sunshine and freedom is upon us. Our grandchildren have finished their last day of school and are eagerly preparing for summer camps—some to sharpen their minds, others to boost athletic skills—and families everywhere are planning getaways and adventures that will create memories for a lifetime.
There is something universally joyful about summer, no matter your age. For kids, it is the freedom from routine, time with friends, exploration, and discovery. For adults, summer is often a time to slow down, reconnect with family, and savor longer days filled with light and laughter. Whether you’re heading to the lake, camping under the stars, or simply enjoying quiet evenings in your backyard, summer speaks to something deep in all of us—a desire to live more fully in the moment.
The season has already kicked off with festivities around the world. In Canada, Victoria Day weekend in mid-May signals the beginning of summer with fireworks, outdoor parties, and trips to the cottage. In the United States, Memorial Day weekend honors those who served while also marking the unofficial start of summer—complete with backyard BBQs and parades. And just this past Sunday, Latvians celebrated Vasarsvētki, or the Summer Festival, an ancient tradition that brings communities together with music, dancing, and the joy of nature’s renewal.
Throughout much of North America, this season is synonymous with firing up the grill, getting the boats on the water, and planting gardens. But here in Southern California, we are lucky—we can enjoy these pleasures year-round. Still, there is a unique energy in the air as summer begins. The days grow longer, the sunsets more golden, and life feels just a little bit more relaxed.
So as you step outside into this beautiful season, don’t forget your sunblock, stay hydrated, and take time to enjoy the simple pleasures of summer. Whether you are traveling or staying close to home, we wish you a season full of health, happiness, and sunshine.

Otoplasty: A Subtle Yet Life-Changing Procedure
By Dr. Deborah Ekstrom, Orange County Plastic Surgery
Corona Del Mar/Newport Beach, California
Otoplasty—commonly referred to as ear pinning—is a time-tested surgical procedure designed to correct protruding ears. Though seemingly minor, this adjustment can have a major impact on self-esteem, particularly in children and adults who may face teasing or feel self-conscious.
The earliest attempts at ear reshaping date back over a century, with rudimentary suturing techniques. Over time, refinements have led to today’s advanced methods that reshape the cartilage more naturally, preserve ear structure, and provide longer-lasting results. Modern otoplasty techniques often use a combination of permanent sutures and strategic cartilage scoring or resection to achieve a more balanced and harmonious ear shape.
The ideal candidate is someone—child or adult—with ears that significantly protrude or appear asymmetrical but are otherwise healthy. In children, surgery is typically done after age five, once the ears have reached near-adult size. Adults of all ages also benefit, often choosing the procedure to address long-standing concerns.
Performed under a light general anesthetic, an otoplasty procedure usually takes 1–2 hours in a day surgery facility. An incision is made behind the ear, hidden on the back side of the ear, through which the cartilage is reshaped and sutured closer to the head.
Recovery is generally smooth. A headband-style dressing is worn for the first few days, followed by a lighter band worn at night for several weeks to protect the ears while sleeping. Discomfort is mild, and most patients return to work or school within a few days.
Otoplasty offers not just cosmetic enhancement, but emotional relief. For many patients, the procedure is life-changing—restoring confidence and putting a lifetime of self-consciousness behind them.
This is a 55 year old male who disliked the prominence of his ears especially while wearing sunglasses. After his otoplasty, the patient is pleased with his results. (actual patient of Dr. Deborah Ekstrom).
