Thinking About Life Abroad — A Surgeon’s Reflection

By Dr. Juris Bunkis

The last two newsletters came to you from our travels through Portugal, where Dr. Ekstrom and I were exploring the possibility of living abroad someday. We were curious — could life after retirement be just as rich, maybe even richer, in a different part of the world?

We spent time in the Algarve region, and we have to admit: it was enchanting. Beautiful weather, delicious Mediterranean food, stunning coastline, and warm, welcoming people. We also had the chance to hear from folks living in France, Italy, Spain, and Greece, all describing a slower, simpler, and often more affordable way of life. It’s easy to see the appeal.

But now that we’re back home, enjoying the California sunshine, our favorite restaurants, and the company of lifelong friends and family, we’re reminded why we love it here too. Newport Beach has its own kind of magic — one we sometimes forget to appreciate until we return from afar.

The toughest part about imagining a life abroad isn’t adjusting to new customs or language — it’s imagining life without the daily connection to those we love. Friends, family, and community are the real glue that holds a life together.

So what’s the best solution? Maybe not one or the other, but both. A hybrid life. Spend a few months abroad to recharge and rediscover. Then come home to what feels familiar and rooted. We don’t have to choose just one path.

Whether it’s by the cliffs of the Algarve or the bluffs above Crystal Cove, life is full of beauty — and choices. We’re grateful for both.

What’s missing from life abroad, kids and grandkids!

Spring into Confidence:
Is It Time for a Breast Lift with Your Augmentation?

By Dr. Deborah Ekstrom

Spring is always a busy time in our practice, especially here in sunny California. As the weather warms up and we start reaching for tank tops and swimsuits, many of our patients begin thinking about how they want to look and feel this summer. Breast enhancement and body contouring consultations tend to spike in the spring, and for good reason—now is the ideal time to take steps toward the body you envision.

One of the most common procedures requested this season is breast augmentation. Many women seek fuller, more proportionate breasts, whether due to heredity, aging, weight changes, or the effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding. But for some, breast volume isn’t the only concern—there may also be some degree of breast droop, or ptosis.

In these cases, we often discuss whether a lift (mastopexy) should be performed in addition to an augmentation. While a straightforward augmentation offers less visible scarring and a faster recovery, it may not provide the lifted, youthful contour some patients are hoping for. A mastopexy, though more involved, allows us to reshape and elevate the breast, often giving a more aesthetically pleasing and longer-lasting result.

The decision to add a lift is based on several factors: nipple position, skin quality, and the degree of sagging. During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your anatomy, listen to your goals, and recommend the approach that will best achieve the look you desire.

With over 40 years of experience, our goal is simple: to help each patient feel confident and beautiful in her own skin. If you’re thinking about breast enhancement, now is the perfect time to come in for a personalized consultation. Let’s make this your best summer yet!
