Learning About Love
By Dr. Juris Bunkis, Medical Director, Orange County Plastic Surgery Honorary Consul of the Republic of Latvia
Valentine’s Day is almost here again, and with it comes that familiar annual scramble: picking out the perfect card, finding flowers that haven’t already sold out, and choosing a gift that truly says “I love you.”
Over the years, Valentine’s Day has become one of the most widely celebrated holidays in America—not just as a romantic tradition, but as a cultural and economic phenomenon. Each February, millions of people express affection through small gestures and grand surprises. Restaurants fill up, florists work overtime, and greeting card companies do their biggest business of the year.
What’s especially interesting is how Valentine’s Day has expanded far beyond its origins. What began centuries ago as a feast day honoring Saint Valentine has evolved into a worldwide celebration of love. Today, it’s observed in Europe, Asia, South America, and beyond—each culture adding its own flavor, but all centered around the same universal theme: appreciation for those who matter most.
At Orange County Plastic Surgery, we see Valentine’s Day in a unique way. This season is often one of our busiest times of year, because many people choose to give their loved ones something a little different—an experience, an investment in confidence, or even a gift certificate for a procedure they’ve been considering for years. Please call one of our patient coordinators, Jo Cattell or Judy Sacedo, if you need any assistance with a gift certificate. Whether it’s facial rejuvenation, fat grafting, or simply Beauty Injections or a filler, these gifts are often deeply personal expressions of care.
For me, Valentine’s Day also brings reflection. It reminds me of where our understanding of love begins—at home. Many of you who read these blogs know about my mother, Jadviga. She lives about 90 minutes east of Toronto and has visited us many times in California and Massachusetts.
We call her every single day, checking in on her busy schedule—who she is visiting, who is visiting her, what she is baking, what concert or show she’s attending, what the weather is like, and so forth. She continues to live independently, celebrating each day with remarkable joy.
Growing up, the example of love that my mother and father showed us formed the cornerstone of everything I understand about devotion and family.
This coming February 14th will be my mother’s 100th Valentine’s Day. When she was a child in Latvia, this holiday wasn’t celebrated—but today, she is surrounded by love from across continents.
We sent her flowers a little early, and we’ll send more on Valentine’s Day. She is in our hearts every day.
LOVE YOU, MOM!
My Mom, who will be 100 years old in May, is celebrating her 100th Valentine’s Day!

The Gift of Natural Rejuvenation: Why Fat Grafting Is the Most Romantic Procedure of All

Quiz Of The Day

A. Collagen creams
B. Botox injections
C. Fat grafting (fat transfer)
D. Chemical peels
E. Laser resurfacing
✅ Correct Answer: C. Fat grafting (fat transfer)
Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love—and also a wonderful reminder to care for ourselves. At Orange County Plastic Surgery, this time of year often inspires patients to think about renewal, confidence, and the ways they want to look and feel their best.
One of the most meaningful trends we see today is the growing popularity of natural rejuvenation—enhancing what you already have rather than changing who you are. That’s where fat grafting plays such an exciting role in modern plastic surgery.
Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, allows us to gently remove unwanted fat from one area of the body—often the abdomen or thighs—and carefully reintroduce it where volume has been lost. This can include the face, hands, breasts, or even the buttocks. It is a beautiful way to restore youthful contours using your body’s own tissue.
In facial rejuvenation, fat grafting can soften hollow areas under the eyes, enhance cheeks, improve the appearance of the lips, and restore balance after weight loss or aging. Unlike temporary fillers, fat grafting offers longer-lasting results and can improve skin quality over time because fat contains regenerative cells.
For breast and body contouring, fat transfer can provide subtle enhancement and smoothing, often used alongside liposuction or breast surgery to achieve the most natural shape possible. Patients love that this approach is both sculpting and restorative—removing volume where it’s unwanted and adding it where it’s needed.
Valentine’s Day gifts come in many forms: flowers, jewelry, a heartfelt note. But some patients choose to give themselves something lasting—confidence, comfort in their appearance, or the joy of finally doing something they’ve been considering for years.
If you’ve been curious about fat grafting, body contouring, or facial rejuvenation, this season may be the perfect time to explore your options.
From all of us at Orange County Plastic Surgery, we wish you a Valentine’s Day filled with love—shared with others and with yourself.
Because caring is at the heart of everything we do.
Before and “after” photos of a 51-year-old who was looking for a conservative fill of her dorsal hands, who disliked her prominent veins. She sought consultation with Dr. Deborah Ekstrom and agreed to a microfat grafting of the tops of her hands. Fat was harvested from her thighs and her hip rolls to give her this pleasing result.
