Come Join us for this Historic Holocaust Commemoration

By Dr. Juris Bunkis

In my role as the Consul for the Republic of Latvia in Southern California, in conjunction with the Estonian Consul and our respective communities, we have had the pleasure of organizing a historic Holocaust Commemoration which will be held at the Latvian Center in Los Angeles on January 28th – I would be honored to have as many of you as fit in the hall come and join us. Please follow the RSVP instructions below to join us.

Today, the Baltic nations of Latvia and Estonia make the news as possible targets for Russia if Ukraine loses the battle for her independence. This region has been the center of turmoil for generations.
The Baltics suffered the tragedy of a Soviet invasion in 1940, a Nazi conquest in 1941 and were invaded again by the Soviets in 1944 – this time our conquerors stayed for 50 years. When the Soviets first invaded, some Balts welcomed them and collaborated with them to establish Soviet control. Others collaborated with the Germans when they came in – NKVD and Nazi files verify that each conquest saw plenty of Baltic quislings volunteer to help our invaders.
Much has been written and spoken about the Soviet atrocities in the Baltics but the Holocaust has received less mention. The Honorary Consuls of Estonia and Latvia, together with the Latvian and Estonian Societies in Los Angeles, invite you to this not-to-be-missed historical presentation of Baltic history.

Spotlight on Plastic Surgery – Big Results From Something Small

By Drs. Deborah Ekstrom & Juris Bunkis

Plastic surgery procedures such as chin implants, neck liposuction, and lower lid fat removal are considered minimally invasive yet yield significant aesthetic enhancements. These subtle interventions can make a profound difference in one’s overall appearance, offering patients the opportunity to refine specific features without undergoing extensive surgery.

Chin implants, for instance, are a popular choice for individuals looking to achieve a more balanced facial profile. A modest adjustment to the chin’s structure can create a harmonious relationship between the nose, lips, and jawline, leading to a more aesthetically pleasing look. This simple procedure is often chosen by those seeking a subtle enhancement that can have a transformative impact on facial symmetry.
Neck liposuction is another example of a small-scale intervention with noticeable results. This procedure targets excess fat deposits in the neck area, addressing concerns such as the dreaded “double chin.” By removing unwanted fat, the neck gains a more defined contour, contributing to a slimmer and more youthful appearance. Neck liposuction is particularly appealing for our younger patients with excellent skin tone who desire a refined neck profile without the need for extensive surgery. Unfortunately, this same procedure will not do much for an older patient with significant sagging – a facelift will be the best answer in these cases.
Lower lid fat removal, also known as lower blepharoplasty, targets the accumulation of fat and sagging skin beneath the eyes. This procedure is an excellent solution for individuals grappling with under-eye bags and a tired appearance. By delicately removing excess fat and tightening the skin, lower lid fat removal can rejuvenate the eyes, creating a refreshed and alert look.

What makes these procedures stand out is their ability to achieve significant improvements with minimal disruption. Patients can experience a boost in self-confidence and satisfaction without the extended recovery periods associated with more extensive surgeries. As the demand for subtle enhancements continues to rise, these small yet impactful plastic surgery procedures offer individuals the chance to refine specific areas and enhance their natural beauty.

This small chin implant can make a huge difference in one’s profile.

Example of a patient who really looked good for her age but disliked her profile and minor lower lid bags, shown here before and after insertion of a small chin implant, a neck liposuction and a lower lid blepharoplasty by Dr. Bunkis.
